Karachi Kings – Preview

Karachi Kings is a professional T20 cricket franchise in Pakistan that is a part of the Pakistan Super League PSL cricket league. They’ve been participating in the league since its inaugural season in 2015. They are also the champions of PSL season 5. They are the representative of the capital in Sindh. Their home base is the National Stadium Karachi.

A number of famous former world players have joined Karachi’s team. Peter Moores is their current head coach. Wasim Akram serves as their director and president. Dougie Brown is their bowling coach. In discussing the top players in the team, Muhammad Amir is the top wicket-taker. Babar Azam has been the most prolific scorer for the team.

Ownership History

Salman Iqbal is the owner of Karachi Kings. The franchise was transferred by ARY Media Group in 2015 for $26 million and an option of a ten-year contract. According to the price, it was the most expensive franchise in the PSL at that moment. After that Multan Sultans replaced them as the most expensive franchise.

The Team’s Identity as well as Sponsors and Partners

The logo and team name were announced by manager Salman Iqbal in the month of December 2015. The logo features a roaring lion with the team’s name inscribed below having golden and blue primary colors. The franchise has many sponsors for this franchise which are listed below.

The Kit maker of Karachi Kings is AJ Sports in all seasons, the shirt front sponsor was Bahria Town from 2016-2018. In 2016, the shirt’s back was sponsored by Summit bank, front branding by The Arkadians and the sleeve branding by Oye Hoye Chips, K-Electric, Shield, and Igloo Ice Cream.

In 2017, the shirt’s back was sponsored by Bridge Power Batteries, front branding by The Arkadians and the sleeve branding by Oye Hoye Chips, Shield, and Tapal Tea.

In 2018, the shirt’s back was sponsored by Nurpur, front branding by The Arkadians and the sleeve branding by Brighto Paints, Imtiaz Super Market and Shield.

In 2019, the shirt front sponsor was TUC, the shirt’s back was sponsored by Scene On!, front branding by Cadbury Dairy Milk and the sleeve branding by Imtiaz Super Market, Inverex and Rooh Afza.

In 2020, the shirt front sponsor was ARY Laguna, the shirt’s back was sponsored by QMobile, front branding by Surf Excel and the sleeve branding by Imtiaz Super Market, Mughal Steel and ARY Laguna.

In 2021, the shirt front sponsor was ARY Laguna, the shirt’s back was sponsored by Hashmi Ispaghol, front branding by Pepsi and the sleeve branding by Imtiaz Super Market, Mughal Steel and ME Body Spray.

In 2022, the shirt front sponsor was PSO Carient Motor Oil, the shirt’s back was sponsored by Bank Islami, front branding by Pepsi and the sleeve branding by Imtiaz Super Market, Mughal Steel and Bona Papa.

Karachi Kings PSL History

PSL 2016 Season 1

Karachi kings started its campaign at the tournament by winning in the first match against Lahore Qalandars. Muhammad Amir also got a hat trick in this game. The team then performed extremely poorly and could only win one game after that. They finished fourth in the points table, scoring 4 points after winning two of their eight games in the group phase.

They were able to get into the playoffs. They faced Islamabad United in the eliminator game but lost. This ended their journey in the opening season.

PSL 2017 Season 2

In the 2nd PSL Season, Azhar Mehmood was appointed the coach while Kumar Sangakkara and Babar Azam joined the Karachi Kings team. They finished 3rd on the points table, scoring 8 points, by winning four of their eight matches in the group stage.

They were able to qualify for the playoffs and were able to play against Islamabad United during the qualifier game and won the match. In the second elimination match, they faced Peshawar Zalmi, but fell to them and finished their match in 3rd position.

PSL 2018 Season 3

Prior to the 3rd season, Karachi Kings captain Kumar Sangakkara was replaced by Imad Wasim. Shahid Afridi also became a part of the team as a senior player as well as president. Karachi placed 3rd in the table of points after the group stage where they were able to win 5 of their 10 matches, while one game ended without a result.

They then made it to the playoffs stage in which they played against Islamabad United in the first game. They defeated Islamabad United to move to the next elimination match against Peshawar Zalmi. However, they lost against them and in this manner, their tournament journey finished.

PSL 2019 Season 4

This season, Karachi Kings retained Imad Wasim as their captain of the team. The team started the season with a bang with a win over Multan Sultans by seven runs. They won five out of the 10 group matches and finished 4th on the table of points having scored 10 points.

They once again made it to the playoffs stage, played against Islamabad United in the eliminator game, and were defeated by four wickets. This defeat ended their journey in the tournament.

PSL 2020 Season 5

A large number of players were retained while keeping Imad Wasim as their Captain. Karachi had a good start, winning against Peshawar Zalmi with 10 wickets in their opening game, but was defeated by Quetta Gladiators in the second match. They finished in second position with 11 points during the group stage, having been able to win 5 of 10 matches, and one game was tied.

They were able to qualify for the playoffs and were matched against Multan Sultans in their qualifying match. They beat Sultans by two wickets in a tight game and moved to the finals. In the final game, they defeated Lahore Qalandars by 5 wickets to be crowned champions and take home the PSL trophy for the first time.

PSL 2021 Season 6

During this period, the Kings were able to change their coaches and the responsibilities were transferred to previous South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs. Kings, the defending champions, began their tournament by winning against Quetta Gladiators. They were able to win 5 of their 10 group games and finished in 4th position in the points table, scoring 10 points.

They were able to play in the elimination match but couldn’t win it. Peshawar Zalmi won by 5 wickets. They were exiled from the tournament.

PSL 2022 Season 7

The season was an absolute failure and a complete disaster for Karachi Kings. They won only one match against Lahore Qalandars. In the rest of their matches, they lost on their side. Karachi ended up at the bottom of the points table, scoring only two points.

PSL 2023 Season 8

The 8th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) is just around the corner and we couldn’t be more excited! This year’s tournament will see some new changes. The date for the 8th season of the Pakistan Super League has been revealed. PSL-8 would be conducted from February 13th to March 19th, 2023.
